LESSON
3
Write about your goals
WRITING
GET READY
Susan is completing her performance evaluation form. She is writing about her goals.
Do you set goals for yourself at work or school?
STUDY THE MODEL
A
Read the performance evaluation form. What is Susan’s long-term goal?
EMPLOYEE GOALS
Current Year Goals
List at least 3 goals for this year and the specific steps you will take to reach those goals.
1.
I will maintain a professional distance with my patients. To do this I will discuss my time
limitations with patients. And I will make sure each patient gets equal attention.
2.
I will increase my knowledge of the patient database. I plan to schedule a training session
with the IT department, and I will spend at least 15 minutes each day working on the
database.
3.
I will improve and update my general nursing skills. I will attend at least 4 of the monthly
training sessions offered by the department. I will also attend one of the nursing conventions
at the Medical Center.
4.
I will keep a record of my achievements and identify ways to improve my work performance.
I will start a nursing journal this year and write in it once a week.
Long-Term Goals
List 1 goal that you want to reach in the next 5 years.
My long-term goal is to become a Registered Nurse within 4 years. This year I will start taking
steps towards that goal. I will meet with the Human Resources department to get information
about Park View’s LVN-to-RN program.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION FORM
When writing about goals, it’s important to use
quantifiable
language.
Use numbers to say exactly what you want to do. Give dates or
times for when you want to complete any actions. This will help you
measure your success in achieving your goals.
Writing Tip
B
Read the Writing Tip. Then read the evaluation form again.
Underline 3 numbers that Susan used to quantify her goals.
