So What Do
You
Do For A Living?
“I never thought I’d be doing this,” Joe Merone
says about his strange career as a cook. What’s
unusual about being a cook? Joe is a Culinary
Specialist on a nuclear submarine. “I was working
in a restaurant and met a customer from the navy.
He said that if I wanted a challenge, I should try
cooking underwater,” explains Joe. “I wanted
something new, so I enlisted. I’ve learned a lot. We
run out of fresh ingredients after a few weeks at
sea, so I’ve really learned how to get the most out
of canned food. I just had to get used to not having
any windows!”
Like Joe, many people find themselves working
jobs they never even knew existed. Here are a few
more unusual careers that may surprise you.
Golf Ball Diver
Ever wonder what happens to
balls that land in the water on golf courses?
They’re collected by professional golf ball divers
wearing SCUBA gear. A good diver can recover
1,000 balls an hour, earning about $100. If that
sounds like easy work, think again. The divers feel
for balls with their hands in total darkness. They
often get cut by broken glass and bitten by snakes!
Average salary: $35,000.
Foley Artist
Did you know that most sounds in a
movie are not made by the actors? Studios later
add background noises, such as footsteps. Sound
experts, called Foley artists, find creative ways to
make any sound the studio may need. For example,
they may shake a sheet of metal to simulate
thunder or slap gloves together for flapping bird
wings.
Average salary: $80,000.
Breath Odor Tester
How do mouthwash
companies know that their products stop bad
breath? They employ people with an excellent sense
of smell to test them! These fearless workers smell
people’s breath before and after they use the
mouthwash. Then they evaluate how well it works.
Average salary: $53,000.
Supporting illustrations
are art or
photos that are included with an
article. Writers use illustrations
to help the reader understand the
meaning of the text. Look at the
illustrations of a text before you
read to get an idea of what the
article is about.
