other sports, kids would want to
try them.’ Ibrahim, you’re a
journalist, what’s your view?
I:
Well, I couldn’t agree more.
I think it’s a great pity some sports,
like football, get so much media
attention, while others, like
badminton or table tennis, are
often ignored. And this problem
isn’t going away any time soon,
either.
D:
All right, we’ve got another email
here. It says: ‘I think kids should
do a lot more sport at school. I’ve
heard that in Sweden, kids have
ten hours of sport a week. If I was
the Minister for Sport, I’d give
every schoolchild the opportunity
to do a much wider range of
sports. What about hockey or judo
for all? If they had more
opportunities, they wouldn’t be so
unhealthy.’ Keri, hockey and judo
at every school?
K:
Absolutely. It’s really important
that kids get the chance to
experience different sports from an
early age.
I was really lucky because when I
was a child, I went to a sports club
where we did hockey and fencing
and archery, but nowadays, most
kids aren’t so lucky. Most schools
just concentrate on the same one
or two, you know, football,
basketball …
D:
OK, here’s another email It starts
‘In this country, we think …’
LESSON 12.3 RECORDING 12.2
M = Dr Sophia Mannit, A = Adel
M:
Well, Alex, the interview starts
with a short questionnaire
looking at your personality, and
then we’ll talk more about your
personal experience of sport.
A:
OK.
M:
Right, well, here’s the first
question: If you took an exam next
week, would you: A) feel annoyed
if your friends got higher marks
than you, B) care a little if your
friends’ marks are higher, or C)
have no interest in your friends’
scores?
A:
Well … that’s a difficult one …
I mean, I’d be happy for my
friends, but I’d also want to do
better than them. I’d definitely be
interested in my friends’ scores.
M:
So, which would you do? A, B
or C?
A:
Right. Er, let me see … I think
I’d do A. I would feel annoyed, but
annoyed with myself, not with my
friends.
M:
OK, and the next question: If you
wanted to go on a day trip, would
you: A) ask many friends to go
with you, B) ask a friend to go with
you, or C) go on your own?
A:
Well, I’m afraid I don’t really go
on day trips. I’m too busy.
M:
I understand, but if you did, what
would you do? A) go with many
friends, B) go with one friend, or
C) go on your own.
A:
OK, well, let me think … well, to
be honest, I’d do B – I don’t like to
do things on my own, but also big
groups can be annoying. You
know, no one can decide what to
do, or you can’t do what you want
to do.
M:
Fine. And finally: If you went on a
weekend trip to a foreign city,
would you: A) book nothing in
advance and just go, B) book
accommodation in advance, but
not plan your sightseeing, or C)
book accommodation in advance
and plan your visit in detail.
A:
Hmm, that’s a tricky question …
I’m not sure, really. I mean,
I wouldn’t do A, but, I’m not sure
about B or C.
M:
OK, well, can you remember your
last holiday or trip?
A:
Uh-huh. Let me think … um,
I’d do B, more or less. I would
make some plans, but perhaps not
in detail.
M:
Right, well, that’s great. Thank you
for that. Would you like to know
what your answers mean?
A:
Yes, I would. Can you tell me
now?
LESSON 12.3 RECORDING 12.3
SM = Dr Sophia Mannit, A = Adel
M:
Right, well, that’s great. Thank you
for that. Would you like to know
what your answers mean?
A:
Yes, I would. Can you tell me
now?
M:
Sure, let’s see. You chose A for the
first question, which shows you’re
very competitive. Let me check …
yes, you chose B for the second
one, you would ask a friend to go
with you, which shows you’re
quite social. As you said, you don’t
like to do things on your own.
Finally, you chose B for the third
question, the one about holiday
planning, which means you like a
little risk, but not too much.
A:
I guess that’s quite true about me,
although I’m not too competitive,
I hope. I mean, I always like to
have fun when playing sport,
although team sports can be
annoying.
M:
I’m sure, and from these answers,
I think you’d like sports such as
badminton or squash, because
competition is very important for
you. But sports which are more
individual, like swimming, would
not be so good for you.
A:
Really? Well, the only sport I play
is tennis, and I love that.
M:
Well, that’s a competitive sport,
isn’t it?
A:
Indeed.
M:
And have you ever tried adventure
sports?
A:
No, I haven’t. Why do you ask?
M:
Well, the results of the
questionnaire also suggest you’d
like a little risk. So, you might
enjoy white-water rafting, or rock
climbing.
A:
Rock climbing?! No way. I suffer
from vertigo; I’m scared of heights.
M:
Really?
A:
Really.
M:
I see, and have you seen a
psychologist about this? I’ve
always wanted to do some
experiments about …
LESSON 12.4 RECORDING 12.6
T = Tutor, S1 = Student 1,
S2 = Student 2, S3 = Student 3,
S4 = Student 4, S5 = Student 5
T:
Yes, that’s a very good point,
Nicole. OK, now, let’s have a look
at the next problem. OK, it says
here: ‘I’m often late for
appointments, or sometimes I miss
appointments completely.’ Would
anyone like to say something
about this?
S1:
Yes, keep a diary which clearly
shows all your appointments …
and classes.
S2:
That’s right, but it’s not enough
just to have a diary. We need to
make sure we look at it. Check
your diary last thing at night and
first thing in the morning.
T:
Absolutely. You should also write
all the homework you have to do
in the diary – not on pieces of
paper that you can lose easily.
Good. Now, next problem:
‘I spend a lot of time looking for
my notes. I can never find
