some Japanese drummers. There
are 45 of them. It says here that it’s
powerful and unique. It’s called
Taiko Drumming.
E:
Sounds great.
C:
Uh-huh, and the second one is the
one-man theatre show. In this
show, there’s only one actor, but
he plays many different characters.
It’s all about the life story of
Shakespeare. Apparently, ‘you will
laugh out loud’.
E:
I never laughed when we studied
Shakespeare at school.
C:
Well, this show could be good.
E:
Well, I’m more interested in the
Japanese drummers than the
one-man theatre show.
C:
I thought so, but perhaps we
shouldn’t go to a second music
event.
E:
Hmm, maybe. Paul, which would
you prefer to go to?
P:
Oh, I’d love to see the drummers.
They sound amazing. And it’s a
great chance to see something
different and unusual. I’d rather
see that than a play about
Shakespeare.
C:
But it says that the play’s really
funny. And how interesting is
two hours of drumming going to
be?
E:
Oh Christine, I’m sure the Taiko
drumming will be really
interesting. I’ve seen some of it on
TV, and I’d love to see it live.
C:
OK, then, let’s go and see the
drummers. But tomorrow, no
music, OK?
E:
Well, maybe. Let’s see how we
feel tomorrow.
LESSON 8.4 RECORDING 8.11
Soon, we could see it better, and we
all knew what it was – We sat there,
confused and scared. Who or what
could be moving around in the dark?
We couldn’t move, and nobody spoke.
Later, we laughed a lot about a lost
desert goat.
LESSON 9.1 RECORDING 9.1
C = Consultant, A = Anita, Y = Yusuf
C:
Come in. Hello. It’s Anita, isn’t it?
A:
That’s right.
C:
OK, let me just have a look at the
information here … you work in
the Marketing Department?
A:
Yeah.
C:
And you’ve been with the
company for … six years.
A:
That’s right.
C:
All right, first of all let’s talk about
your general feelings about your
job. Do you feel the same way
now as you did six years ago?
A:
Well, no, not really. I mean,
I think I used to be more
enthusiastic. Maybe it’s because
I’m older now.
C:
Well, you’re still only 28. That’s
not exactly old!
A:
No, I suppose not.
C:
What else has changed?
A:
I work longer hours now. When
I started, I didn’t use to finish
work so late. Now, I go home after
seven nearly every day, but I don’t
think I really achieve any more.
C:
I see. What about the company? Is
it helping you to develop new
skills?
A:
Yes, up to a point. I’ve done one or
two management training courses
in the last couple of years. I think
I’m ready for promotion now.
C:
What about other aspects of the
job? Do you get the opportunity to
travel much?
A:
No, not much. But I don’t really
mind that. You see, I have to look
after my mother and …
***
Y:
Good morning! I’m Yusuf.
C:
Hello, Yusuf. Have a seat. Well,
you seem to have the longest
service record – 17 years!
Y:
That’s right.
C:
Well, you’re obviously happy
here!
Y:
I am, yes, although it used to be
more fun.
C:
Why’s that?
Y:
Well, it was more sociable.
I used to go out more with my
colleagues, after work and for
lunch. When I first started here, we
had very long lunch breaks,
sometimes for two hours. Now it’s
more like 30 minutes. And we all
used the gym together. That
doesn’t happen much now.
C:
Did you use to work more as a
team?
Y:
Yes, I suppose we did. It’s
interesting you mention that.
We’re more on our own now. I
also used to travel a lot more, too.
They’ve cut down on that.
C:
Has anything changed for the
better?
Y:
Yes, there are more opportunities
to learn new skills and develop
your career. It’s more professional
now. Also, they didn’t use to pay
you properly. The money’s much
better now! That’s probably why
I’m still here!
C:
What about yourself? Have you
changed at the same time as the
company?
Y:
No, I don’t think so. I think I’m
pretty much the same person
I was all those years ago.
LESSON 9.1 RECORDING 9.2
1
She used to work late.
2
Did you use to go out more with
colleagues?
3
He didn’t use to listen to me.
4
She didn’t use the gym every day.
5
They used their opportunities well.
6
Did the company use the results of
the survey?
LESSON 9.3 RECORDING 9.3
L = Lu Han, R = Richard
L:
So, which of our products are you
interested in?
R:
OK, well, we’re interested in
buying some digital music players,
the IP4 model. How much are they
per item?
L:
Mm, let’s see … Yes, they’re $100
each.
R:
A hundred dollars? That seems
quite high.
L:
Really? I see. How much would
you like to pay?
R:
About $85.
L:
I see. Well, I’m not sure that we
can go that low, but we can offer
you a discount. It depends on the
quantity that you order. How
many would you like to order?
R:
We’d like 550. What discount can
you offer?
L:
Well, we can offer a 5% discount
on 550, but if you order 1,000, we
can offer 18%.
R:
I see. I’m not sure that we can
sell 1,000. What about if we order
750?
L:
Well, then we can give you a 10%
discount.
R:
Hmm, that’s still a bit low. How
about 13%?
L:
13%? I’m afraid we can’t offer that
on 750. However, if you order
850, we can give you a 13%
discount.
R:
Hmm, 850, well …
L:
It’s not very many more, and the
discount is good.
R:
Well, yes, OK then. We’ll order
850.
L:
Fine, and we’ll give a discount.
So, the final price is $87 per item.
R:
Great. Now, what’s your normal
delivery time?
L:
It’s usually 30 days after your order.
R:
OK, the standard time. Actually,
