SERIES CONSULTANTS
Susan Gaer
has worked as
an ESL teacher since 1980
and currently teaches at the
Santa Ana College School of
Continuing Education. She is
an avid user of technology and
trains teachers online for TESOL
and the Outreach Technical
Assistance Center (OTAN).
Susan is a frequent presenter
at local, state, national, and international conferences
on using the latest technology with adult learners from
the literacy level through transition to college. She has
co-authored books and teacher’s manuals, served on
the executive boards for CATESOL (California Teachers
of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and TESOL,
and contributed to standing committees for professional
development and technology. Susan holds a master’s
degree in English with emphasis in TESOL from San
Francisco State University and a master’s degree in
Educational Technology from Pepperdine University.
Sarah Lynn
has over twenty-five
years of teaching experience in
ESOL. She has dedicated much
of her teaching life to working
with low-level learners with
interrupted education. Currently
she teaches at the Harvard
Bridge
Program,
Harvard
University. As a teacher trainer,
Sarah has led professional
development workshops throughout the United States
on topics such as teaching in the multilevel classroom,
learner persistence, twenty-first-century skills, self-directed
learning, collaborative learning, and scaffolding learning
for the literacy learner. As a consultant, she has written
ESOL curricula for programs in civics, literacy, phonics,
and English language arts. As a materials writer, she
has contributed to numerous Pearson ELT publications,
including
Business Across Cultures, Future, Future U.S.
Citizens
, and
Project Success
. Sarah holds a master’s
degree in TESOL from Teacher’s College, Columbia
University.
AUTHORS
Barry Bakin
is in his twenty-sixth year of teaching ESL for
the Division of Career and Adult Education (DACE) of the
Los Angeles Unified School District. As an ESL Teacher
Advisor for DACE, he trained instructors in instructional
methods with a focus on promoting the introduction and
integration of technology into the ESL curriculum. Barry
has presented numerous workshops at local, regional, and
international TESOL conferences on ways to use computer
software and the Internet with ESL students. He is currently
an online technology trainer for OTAN (The Outreach and
Technology Assistance Network of the Sacramento County
Office of Education) and is also a “Mentor of Mentors” in
OTAN’s Technology Integration Mentor Academy. Barry has
a master’s degree in instructional technology.
Robyn Brinks Lockwood
has taught ESL in adult education,
in intensive English programs, and at the university level.
She currently teaches English for Foreign Students as part
of the Language Center at Stanford University and serves
as the coordinator for the American Language and Culture
summer program. She has given numerous presentations
at international, regional, state, and local conferences
throughout the United States. Ms. Lockwood has authored
and edited a variety of ESL textbooks, ancillary materials,
and online courses. She holds a master’s degree in
English from Northwest Missouri State University.
Jenni Currie Santamaria
has a masters degree in TEFL/
TESL from San Francisco State University and has taught
ESL and EL Civics for over twenty years. Her ESL experience
includes middle school, adult school, community college,
and university levels, and she has also taught EFL
in Barcelona, Spain. She has served as a curriculum
developer, technology mentor, and EL Civics coordinator.
Her publications include a four-skill coursebook for adults
and a children’s dictionary, as well as numerous teacher’s
guides. She has been a contributing writer for reading,
grammar, and speaking/listening series and has created
many online/interactive activities. Currently, she teaches
at ABC Adult School in Cerritos, California.
