new machines.

they won’t be able to operate the new machines

supplier claims.

What is a subculture?
A subculture is a group of people with a particular set of
beliefs, ideas or behaviour that makes them stand out
from the larger culture.
Subcultures can be split into two main types. Traditional
youth cultures are often defined by their opposition to
the values of the larger culture to which they belong,
and so can be described as a ‘counterculture’. Members
show their membership through a distinctive and
symbolic use of style and dress. However, opposition to
other subcultures is often more important for adherents
than opposition to society in general, for example Mods
and Rockers who fought each other in the 1960’s.
The second type of subculture involves obsessive
fandom or obsessive behaviour. Examples of this type
of subculture include fans of Japanese Manga comics
and players of computer games. Clothing and other
outward signs of belonging are less important for these
types of subculture, although, ironically, this lack of
interest in fashion often means that members are easily
identifiable without consciously trying to look the same.
The style of subcultures has often been adopted by
mass culture for commercial purposes, as business
is always looking for opportunities to make money.
For countercultural subcultures, such as the punk
movement in the United Kingdom, this helps the
evolution and development of the subculture, as its
original members adopt new styles in order to retain
their individuality.
However, with the rise of the Internet, traditional
youth cultures are becoming increasingly irrelevant.
New trends can emerge on social media incredibly
swiftly. They are copied by teenagers all over the world
and, just as quickly, they are replaced by something
else. It has made the world of subcultures much more
dynamic but it is a nightmare for mass-market fashion
companies who cannot hope to keep up with such
temporary crazes.
