LESSON 1.4
EXERCISE 6A (P.13)
COUNSELLOR D
Summary of your conversation with Hassan.
Problems
•
His personality is different from the others. He’s very
sociable and extrovert. He wants to enjoy his time at
university as well as study hard.
•
He has problems with all three housemates. Stewart
is not friendly. Hassan invited him to go to a concert
of Arabic music. ‘Sorry, I don’t have enough money,’
Stewart answered. Paul is boring. ‘He’s always
studying, never having any fun.’ Martin is friendly
and sociable, but too ‘bossy’ and puts up notices
everywhere telling flatmates how to behave properly.
•
Hassan loves Arabic music and is unhappy he can’t
play it in the evening.
Solutions
•
All the housemates should go out for a meal together
once a week.
•
Talk to Paul and explain that he’s spending too much
time studying.
•
Ask Martin to be more relaxed and less ‘bossy’.
LESSON 2.4
EXERCISE 5A (P.23)
STUDENT D: WILDLIFE GROUP REPRESENTATIVE
You are a wildlife group representative.
You are very hostile to the wind farm.
You are a member of a radical wildlife group Flora and
Fauna Protection (FFP). You are strongly against the
building of wind farms in areas of natural beauty.
You think:
•
wind farms are dangerous to all wildlife.
•
birds and bats are often killed when they fly into the
blades of wind turbines.
•
the habitat of many birds, animals and plants will be
destroyed during the building of the farm.
•
the proposed site is home to several rare species of
butterfly.
•
the area currently attracts a large number of scientists
and naturalists who study the wildlife of the area.
•
wind farms are an expensive and wasteful way of
producing electricity.
You want to know what the advantages of wind farms are.
LESSON 8.4
EXERCISE 5A (P.83)
STUDENT D: OPPOSITION PARTY REPRESENTATIVE
You need to listen carefully to the chairperson and
other guests. Ask them to clarify anything you are
not sure about. You also need to make the following
points.
You think Smithsons will have the following
negative effects:
•
be bad for the economy
•
destroy jobs and small businesses
•
use foreign suppliers, which is bad for local suppliers
•
cause damage to the environment
LESSON 2.4
EXERCISE 5A (P.13)
STUDENT E: GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE
You are a government representative.
You are a government minister in the Energy
Department. You will welcome people to the meeting
and lead the meeting.
You think:
•
wind farms are a good idea and building new ones is a
government policy.
•
it is important, however, to listen to the opinions
of local people. There is an election next year and
you do not want to upset too many potential voters.
As Sparrow Hill would be a very big wind farm it is
important to make the right decision.
You want to know what the feelings of local people
about the proposed wind farm are.

provide more international and up-to-date products.
