WRITING
GET READY
Biata wasn’t able to finish a task she was working on. She wrote a
note to her coworker, Layla, on the next shift. Have you ever needed
to ask someone to finish a job for you? How did you explain the task
to the other person?
STUDY THE MODEL
A
Read Biata’s note. What does Biata need Layla to do?
attend a meeting
enter information into a database
talk to patients about their medical history
Layla –
Ida asked me to go to the meeting about the plans with Bay Side. I wasn’t
able to finish entering the patient information into the database, so I need
you to work on this. The unfinished charts are next to the computer. Here’s
how you enter the information for each chart:
First of all, open the database software. (It ’s the icon on the left, named
“Patient Records.”) Then click on “New Patient” at the top left of the
screen. It opens up a new patient file. Next, enter the patient ’s personal
information on screen 1 of the patient ’s file. (Remember to click on
“Save”!) On screen 2, enter the patient ’s medical history. And on screen 3,
enter the patient ’s insurance information. Finally, click on “Submit” and
you’re finished. Please file the finished charts alphabetically.
If you can’t finish all of them, don’t worry. I can take care of it tomorrow.
Thanks!

When giving instructions, it’s important to show the order in which
things must be done. Use
transitional phrases
such as
first of all
,
then
,
next
, and
finally
to signal the steps in the process.
Writing Tip
B
Read the Writing Tip. Then read the note again.
Underline four transitional phrases.
