LESSON
WRITING
Write a narrative paragraph
7
GET READY
Biata is writing an email to an old friend. Do you communicate with your friends by email?
How regularly do you write to them? What do you write about?
STUDY THE MODEL
A
Read the email. What does Biata tell her friend about?
Hi, Jenna.
It was great to hear from you. It’s been a long time since I last saw you!
It sounds like everything is going really well.
You asked how I’m doing at work. Well, today was unbelievable. I’m
home now, and I’m exhausted. This morning, the first thing that
happened was that my coworker Judy called in sick. So I had to work
alone at the desk. Then my boss, Ida, called me in. She asked me to do
some things for her. We are planning for a big meeting, and she wants
everything in order. When I got back to my desk, there were so many
messages on my phone! While I was calling people back, some new
patients came in, and I had to help them complete their forms. At
lunchtime I was able to get away and relax a bit. After that, the
afternoon continued to be very busy. I had to file more papers, make
more phone calls, and enter more patient information into the
database. By 4 o’clock I was pretty tired, and I still had to organize the
stockroom. Finally, I had three patients to call to remind them about
their appointments.
Not every day is like this, though. Today was just one of those days!
Warm regards,
Biata
When writing a narrative paragraph, use
phrases of time and place
such as
In the morning
or
Back at home
. This will help make it clear when and where
the events happen. It will make it easier for readers to follow your story.

B
