My Unusual Childhood

When I was seven years old, my family moved to a
cabin in Wisconsin. At first, life in the cabin was
difficult. I was bored. We didn’t have electricity, so
there was no TV. I missed watching my favorite
TV shows. Also, we lived far from any towns. There
were no shopping malls or movie theaters. I missed playing with my old friends. My parents
had to work hard. My mother was good at gardening and grew lots of fruit and vegetables.
My father raised a few animals: chickens, rabbits, and two goats. He thought he would raise
them for food, but he loved animals too much. We kept them as pets, instead. My father
learned to make cheese from the goats’ milk and get eggs from the chickens. After a while,
I started to enjoy our new life. In the winter, I went skiing. In the summer, we went swimming
in a nearby river. I spent hours exploring the woods and climbing trees. As I look back on my
unusual childhood, our cabin was a great place to grow up.
